Effects of an Educational Smartphone App on Bowel Preparation for Colonoscopy: Systematic Review

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for suggesting improvement of educational smartphone app for colonoscopy through systematic review.

Method: Data collection took place from August to October, 2017. This study searched for operating system of smartphone: Android, iOS. Out of 163 apps, 17 apps were selected for this review. This systematic review was conducted with references searched for databases: RISS, CINAHL, PubMED, Web of Science. 50 studies published the last ten-year period from four electronic databases were reviewed. Eight references that met inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected.

Result: 11 apps were available for both android and iOS, 5 for Android, 1 for iOS. The main focus was on diet restrictions and bowel preparation solutions, Most of the app¡¯s content was written in letters. The study design type consisted of four RCTs and two NRCCTs, and the other two did not describe the design type. Almost studies a significant difference arose between the groups on the quality of bowel cleansing.

Conclusion: This finding that the educational smartphone app increased the quality of bowel cleansing than the current method of education. Therefore, use of an educational smartphone app may have a positive influence on clinical practice
and nursing interventions.
